As projected climate change scenarios predict rising temperatures and changes to precipitation patterns, the question of plant adaptation/acclimation comes into question for many native species. Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) is a widespread shrub found in western North America across a large geographic and environmental range. However, little is known about the phenotypic plasticity of big sagebrush and how much adaptive capacity it possesses under these projected scenarios. This study aimed to look at how hydraulic functional traits vary among populations of big sagebrush. Findings from it suggest that phenotypic plasticity and adaptive capacity in this widespread shrub, that inhabits water-limited environments, may be more associated with thermal constraints than moisture constraints.
