How can we make sure ‘green’ energy is ‘clean’ energy? While the fight against climate change requires a shift to low-carbon technologies, these alternatives are not without severe impacts. Many of the minerals needed to power “sustainable” initiatives are sourced from low and middle-income countries in conditions that would never be tolerated in the US. Addressing the challenges associated with mining is critical if we want to achieve an equitable and sustainable low-carbon future. Lessons learned from the Silver Valley of Idaho can be useful in developing scientifically sound, collaborative approaches to address these challenges. Environmentally sound and equitable programs can be collaboratively developed to support a truly “green” energy future.
